Our achievements include co-inventing and jointly developing our COVID-19 vaccine candidate VTP-900, now Vaxzevria, which we assigned to Oxford University Innovation to facilitate the licensing of those rights to AstraZeneca. We have clinical studies to explore treatments for patients with HBV and HPV infections and are developing rapid and scalable manufacturing processes for our platforms.
In December 2021 Vaccitech acquired Avidea Technologies with exciting product candidates for oncology and autoimmunity based on the innovative SNAPvax platform, which has demonstrated unprecedented control over T cell induction. This gives us US operational presence in Maryland, complements Vaccitech’s established capabilities and reinforces our position as a fast-growing global leader in immunotherapies and vaccines. From March 2022 Vaccitech’s UK headquarters will be moving to a state-of-the-art facility in the UK’s leading science and innovation campus at Harwell. We conduct research globally and have ambitious plans in the UK and US, where we will continue to grow our teams over the coming months and years.
The Laboratory Services Manager will have responsibility for overseeing operations in all aspects of lab services and setting direction to the team to support Bio Level 2 environments and GCP environments. The key deliverables will be the ownership of lab equipment repairs and maintenance, OPEX service contracts, OPEX spending, asset lifecycle management, medical lab gases and Cryogenic supply and storage, Glass wash and consumable stock control and clinical waste management and its compliance. The lab services manager will also oversee the logistic functions including all shipping and receiving activities. The manager must lead his team to always maintain a high level of customer service to meet the operational needs of the various lab depts. The lab service manager reports directly to the Operations Manager and must have the ability to interact between key stakeholders and other function heads and integrate the team activities amongst others across the site. You will be required to direct the services of the in-house lab’s requirements, shipping and receiving, logistics, lab instrumentation mobilization and manage 2 direct reports and external outsourced contractors. You will be a proactively mentor their direct reports and help craft individual goals and career development plans to best align with the company’s goals.
You will coordinate lab facilities-related issues, support lab projects and new lab incentives. You will also deliver maximum quality, and cost-effective customer satisfaction, collaborating and sharing best practise with our counterparts at our other US site. You will be responsible for the dept’s HSE and compliance, ensuring own and reports training records are met, SOP and risk assessments are completed/reviewed and adhered to. As part of your role you will be required to review and agree on a budget in all areas of responsibility, ensuring the best value for money and spending in line with Operational budget requirements. You will also oversee the management of the lab equipment including installation, lifecycle management, asset management, service contracts, repairs, and maintenance.
The Laboratory Services Manager will be required to ensure departmental policies are aligned with regulations, site license and company obligations. You will oversee Clinical and non-clinical waste management operations, including General, recycling, and wee waste ensuring site compliance with all applicable legislation. You will also drive continued improvement and effectiveness in all areas of responsibility including service levels, BCP planning and resiliency plans.
The successful incumbent will assist and support the Operations team to deliver and increase Vaccitech cooperate responsibility to environmental sustainability. You will select, monitor, and put in place quality performance reviews of all Lab Services vendors. You will interact with senior management, EHS, Facilities and sourcing/finance on a regular basis to deliver achievable company targets. You will also coordinate lab facilities-related issues, support lab projects and new lab incentives. The role will require you to manage our laboratory software and user licences, give general/Lab induction to new staff upon joining and develop lab procedures and challenge the scientific and technical rigour of protocols and experiments.
Experience and qualifications
The successful candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience managing laboratory services within the biotech sector. You will have proven managerial experiences including leading and developing a team of staff and building unity. Prior experience in leading repairs and maintenance function in accordance with laboratory compliance including Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is required, together with shipping and logistics experience.
